Rice Not Bullets
Rice Not Bullets is one of the protest cries of the Indigenous people of the Philippines as well as
non-Indigenous allies in both the Philippines and the United States following the Kidapawan Massacre in Kidapawan City in the Philippines in April, 2016 where farmers and Indigenous people took to the streets to ask the government for rations that they had saved up for times of crisis, such as the one facing the Lumads. Due to global warming, a drought has plagued much of the Philippines for nearly a year and people have been starving. Instead of releasing the sacks of rice, the Philippine government opened fire on the over 5, 000 farmers and Lumads in the streets.
Taking its name from this protest cry, Rice Not Bullets, or in Tagalog, Bigas Hindi Bala, I created a series of 3 artistic responses to the massacre and the longer lineage of attacks on Indigenous people in the Philippines.
