Yuen-Ling & Julian

Washington Square Park

10/17/2015
My recorded interview with Yuen-Ling & Julian lasted 3 minutes and 24 seconds.

Yuen-Ling & Julian were both born, raised, met and began their relationship in Germany.

She says, "I was very surprised to see that there are not so many interracial couples in the US even though it's a melting pot." In Germany, "There are more."

He says, "Yes, many more."

"A reason could be that we accept and integrate people in our society. It should probably be the same in the US ...But I don't know, this is just an impression I have. From the first impression I got here, it seems that the ethnicities stay in the same groups - the Afro-Americans stay with the Afro-Americans. The Asians stay with the Asians. Italians stay with the Italians. So, it seems there's not a lot of mixing. It’s not a bad thing. It’s just that they are very proud of their own culture, which makes US a very special place."

The hardest part of being in an interracial relationship:
She says, "He cannot communicate with my parents because their German is not so good."
He says, "That’s right - but I try."

The best part of their interracial relationship:
She says, "I guess it’s culture... I think he learns about my culture and I learn more about where he's from, his culture."
Smiling, Julian says, "Food."
